A NIGHT AT DIZZYLAND

SOMETIME IN 1974 MAYBE

When the band HIT & RUN, or whatever their name was, was playing

If you spent time at Dizzy's, on North Main in Farmington NM back in the 70s you will remember the warm, cozy atmosphere, the ice-cold beer, and the earnest and hardworking local bands that used to play there six nights a week. And of course the high point of your memory will be Georgia and Sterling Patterson behind the bar laughing it up with their customers.

But just in case you may have forgotten the unforgettable SOUND of Dizzy's on a slow night in 1974 when, apparently, a gaggle of demented hoboes wandered in and took up Fender Tucker's Gibson ES-335 guitar, Bill Smith's Fender Precision Bass and Johnny Cunningham's Loud-O-Matic Slingerland drums, I have a reel-to-reel tape of that night.

24 Hours at a Time  (Marshall Tucker Band)

Homicide Blues (The first song Knees Calhoon ever wrote -- Bill Smith plays harmonica and bass, effortlessly)

Safe at Home  (Souther-Hillman-Furay Band)

Miller's Minor Cave  (Bobby Bare's classic done Calhoon-style)

The Road (a Knees Calhoon tune)

Angry Eyes  (Loggins and Messina)

Tonight I'll Be Staying Here With You  (Bob Dylan)

Brown Sugar  (Rolling Stones)

Comin' Back to Me  (Jefferson Airplane)

Roll Over Beethoven  (Chuck Berry)

My Old Friend Fred (a Knees Calhoon tune)

Break My Mind  (a John D. Loudermilk song)

If You Wanna Get to Heaven (partial -- features a weird echo effect)

We'd like to thank everybody for coming out but it's time to call it a night. You don't have to go home but you can't stay here. Be sure to tip your waitresses. On behalf of Georgia, Sterling and the members of Hit & Run, we hope to see you tomorrow night -- and every night for the rest of your natural lives. This is Last Call for Alcohol. Drive sober!
